Hogsett students recognized at meeting

The regular Board of Education meeting on Feb. 18, which took place at Mary G. Hogsett Primary School, saw several student and staff recognitions, a recognition of staff winners of educator grants through the Danville Schools Education Foundation, and steps taken by the board on the upcoming Anchor Plaza project at the front of Danville High School.

Mary G. Hogsett Primary School student Avayah Redford was recognized at the board meeting for being a state champion in wrestling in her weight class.

Several kindergarten and 1st-grade students were recognized for exceptional growth in reading.

Staff members Maggie Colwell, Sarah Krueger and Vaniti Warner were recognized for exceptional patience and care in their work with Hogsett's Bridges Program. More information about the program is available on danvilleschools.net under "News." 

Hogsett's school nurse, Brenda Mullins, recognized at board meeting

Hogsett's school nurse, Brenda Mullins, was recognized for going above and beyond to serve the needs of students and families.

Educator grant recipients recognized at meeting

Gail Wright and Loudetta Robertson of the Danville Schools Education Foundation presented a total of $4,026.84 in educator grants to individuals for the following projects, some of whom are pictured.

Danville High School - Two projects
  • Forensics Coach Karen Tompkins. Project: 4n6 Fanatics Database, $256.70.
  • DHS Student Newspaper Adviser and District Communications Manager Olivia Mohr. Project: The Crow’s Nest student news site, $250.
John W. Bate Middle School - One project
  • Bate Theatre Teacher Darell Rickmers. Project: Thespian Troupe #11778 Spring Production, $250.
Edna L. Toliver Intermediate School - 10 projects
  • Gifted and Talented Coordinator/Teacher Chelcy Sullivan. Project: 3Doodle Learning and Creation Exploration, $245.82.Toliver School Counselor Jenni Goggin and District Wellness Counselor Sammi Anders. Project: GIRLS (Girls in Real Life Situations) social-emotional learning groups, $250.

  • 5th Grade Teacher Jaymie Ross. Project: Can you hear me now? Part 2, $270.
  • 5th Grade Teacher Stacy Fleming. Project: Journals & Headphones, $250.  
  • Dance & Drama Teacher Nicole Short. Project, 5th grade musical, $250
  • Reading Interventionist/Amira Administrator Megan Montgomery. Project: AMIRA Incentives, $250.
Mary G. Hogsett Primary School - Three projects
  • English as a Second Language Teacher Mindi Carrier. Project: Teaching Vocabulary with Digital Cameras, $250.
  • Hogsett School Counselor Brittany Broach and SPED, LBD-Behavior Teacher Pamela Tucker. Projects: Two Project Peaceful Corner projects - $239.10 for one project, $250 for the other project.

The board also took steps on the Anchor Plaza project, an upcoming construction project. The project has several components: to improve accessibility at the entrance of Danville High School, to feature a large, real anchor near the entrance of the school, and to provide an outdoor learning space. 

At the Feb. 18 board meeting, the board unanimously approved that DHS will have new walls at the entrance of the building, as well as new signage near the street. Below are a few potential visual renderings of Anchor Plaza.

The board also heard a report from Food Service Director Tammy Lynn about meals served during the 2023-2024 school year and through the summer feeding program. You can learn more on danvilleschools.net: Food service department served more than 400,000 total meals last year.
