Vocalist Kimberly Milburn will perform at a recital on the Gravely Hall Performing Arts Center stage on Aug. 3 at 3 p.m. The Danville High School graduate marks her first return engagement at the school since her graduation, and she will be accompanied by pianist and DHS teacher Melinda Morgan. A brief Q&A with the audience will follow the performance.

Milburn is excited to return to Danville High School, where her interest in performance was encouraged and nurtured with opportunity.

“At DHS, I was encouraged to be creative, to think about the wider world, the big picture,” she said. “DHS teachers and administrators taught us to be excellent and to believe that absolutely nothing was out of reach, an uncommon sentiment.”

The program will last about an hour and feature Milburn, a mezzo-soprano, singing music with themes of love and hope, beginning with Italian songs and Mexican folk songs arranged by Manuel M. Ponce, followed by songs and arias by composers Schubert, Bizet, and Bolcom, and will conclude with classic musical theatre selections.

“This recital is meant to be accessible and uplifting,” Milburn added. “I hope we can bring a little light in an uncertain time and inspire and speak honestly to the next generation of artists.”
