Dr. Elmer Thomas will return to the Danville Independent School District as interim superintendent.

The DISD Board of Education voted unanimously at Wednesday’s special called board meeting to select Thomas for the interim role, effective June 11.

“He did such an amazing job in our district, holding down the ship,” said Board of Education Chair Esther Rugerio. “We just really felt like, with his background, he would be the right choice for our district at this time.”

She said when he held the interim superintendent role previously, some highlights of his time with the district were that he negotiated the contract with the University of Kentucky to start the dual credit program, and he pushed for an ACT focus. He also worked on making a 5% raise possible for staff.

Thomas currently is an adjunct professor at Eastern Kentucky University and Asbury University. In this capacity, he teaches courses leading to certification in administrative roles in education. Most recently, he was the superintendent for Madison County Schools.
