Daejah Montgomery, a rising Danville High School senior, has been selected to attend the Washington Journalism and Media Conference (WJMC) the week of July 7-12 in Fairfax, Virginia.
“I am honored to have been invited to such a great program,” she said. “I’m excited I get to learn about one of my passions.”
According to the WJMC’s website, George Mason University is hosting the conference. The WJMC hosts high school National Youth Correspondents from around the nation each summer, and the opportunity also allows students to earn college credit.
Daejah’s mother, Crystal Montgomery, said Daejah received a letter inviting her to represent Kentucky at the conference. She said Daejah has some experience writing articles that were featured in the Advocate-Messenger. She wrote about five stories on Danville High School football last school year.
“I’m excited for her,” Crystal Montgomery said. “She’s very talented and gifted in anything she does — singing, playing an instrument, and her writing. That’s what she wants to go to school for, is journalism.”
She said that through the opportunity, Daejah will get to eat breakfast at the White House and interview senators who represent Kentucky.
“Not many people are going to be able to interview the senators one-on-one, so she’s pretty excited about that,” she said.
