The Danville Independent School District welcomes Hayley Hellyer into the role of head coach of the girls basketball team at Danville High School.

Her previous role was assistant girls basketball coach at Asbury University, where the team had a winning season each year she worked there. She’s also been a coach on the high school and middle school levels earlier in her career and has a history of championship wins. As a player, she played basketball at Campbellsville University and in high school.

She’s most excited to meet the DHS team and “hit the ground running.”

“I still have a lot of getting to know them to do, but I think they’re athletic,” she said about her observations of the team. “They know how to get up and down the floor, and they always give it their all.”

Hellyer grew up in Danville herself, so she’s looking forward to giving back, being a “stabilizing force” in her players’ lives, and being part of a community that rallies behind the team.

“I want these girls to feel like what they do matters and that girls’ sports are fun and exciting,” she said. “But then I also want to help them in their next steps, so whether that’s college or they want to do something else, I want to be the person they feel like they can count on and talk to in order to take that next step that they desire.”

She described her coaching style as fun, but also noted that she sets high expectations.

“I also recognize that sports and being on a team have taught me so many things in the working world and life, that it can really prepare you for what’s to come. So that’s what I want. I’m going to have high expectations for them. I’m going to push them. I’m going to work them. I’m going to expect that they win, but we’re going to have fun doing it, and it’s going to be a positive environment.”

“As far as my goals I think winning a district title is always one goal, and making it far in the regions, and competing for the All A Region as well,” she said.
