On Saturday, Nov. 1, Danville High School’s theatre program will debut a brand-new play by regional playwright, and Danville Independent Schools Director of the Arts, Bo List. It's called "Love You to Pieces."

This won’t be its first performance, though, as the students will first perform it at the Kentucky Thespian Festival in Bowling Green, a statewide showcase of high school theatre talent.

Drawing inspiration from two of the Brothers Grimms’ more obscure fairy tales (“The Robber Bridegroom” and “The Twelve Dancing Princesses”), "Love You to Pieces" is a brisk one-act that follows the Grimm lead with darkness, death and dismemberment – along with a love story, some supernatural forces and zombies.

In it, the Princess Reverie is arranged to be married with the sinister Count Destino but learns that he has a terrible secret, cannibalism. She escapes his clutches only to fall under a curse that has her mysteriously disappearing each night only to return with worn-out slippers. Where can she have been all night, and why are her shoes ruined each day?

“I’m delighted to work with such talented young artists,” List said. “And they aren’t just actors. Students have designed and stage-managed this show, too. Their contributions are everywhere.”

Also new to Danville High School, Director Kristi Hughes is in her first year as theatre teacher at DHS.

“Ms. Hughes is a spectacularly talented director and performer, having performed across the globe for many years with such luminous groups as Cirque du Soleil," List said. "She’s bringing something unique and special to our stage, and to the imaginations of our school community.”
