MLK Day Community Event

To celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, there will be a community-wide event based on the theme, "It Starts With Me" on Monday, Jan. 17. It is sponsored by the City of Danville, Danville Independent Schools, Boyle County Schools and other community partners.

There will be a gathering at 12 p.m. at City Hall, immediately followed at 12:10 p.m. by a march to the Jennie Rogers building. The program at Jennie Rogers will begin at 12:45 p.m. It includes guest speakers Kenneth Payne and Damian Logan, and Melinda Weathers will provide the welcome and benediction. All three of these individuals are Danville Schools alumni.

The Danville High School Choir will be performing two selections. Also on the program are poetry readings from honorees in the Frank X Walker Literary Festival Poetry Contest, which was a joint event between Danville and Boyle County Schools. The middle and high school winners from Danville Schools and Boyle County Schools have been invited to read during the program.

There will be music, free T-shirts and a grab-and-go lunch provided courtesy of the City of Danville. Bus transportation back to City Hall will be available courtesy of Danville Schools. There is handicap accessibility at the back of Jennie Rogers. Masks will be required at this event.
