There are many opportunities for students to take part in advanced coursework in the Danville Independent School District.

The district’s advanced coursework policy is available at danvilleschools.net under Families>Advanced Coursework Policy

At the high school level, the benefit to students is that dual credit and Advanced Placement (AP) courses may allow them to earn college credit. Dual credit classes are possible through partnerships with universities. Students earn college credit through that university, which can be transferred to another university or college after high school, after the student passes the class. After completing an AP course, students can complete AP exams. A score of 3 or higher makes it possible for them to earn college credit at universities or colleges that will accept the credit. In addition, when students apply for college, taking AP or dual credit courses is taken into consideration because students will likely be more prepared for challenging courses in college.

The benefit of taking advanced courses in middle school, or participating in Gifted and Talented opportunities in elementary school and beyond (if a student qualifies) is that students gain confidence to learn and do challenging things, and they can be more prepared for advanced courses on a higher academic level.

Danville High School

DHS has robust dual credit and AP course options. In fact, DHS recently received a silver status on the AP School Honor Roll for the 2024-25 school year

You can view the DHS advanced coursework policy, approved by the School-Based Decision Making Council (SBDM), at dhs.danvilleschools.net under About Our School>SBDM. On the SBDM page, click “SBDM Policies” at the bottom of the page and find the school’s advanced coursework policy in the folder.

John W. Bate Middle School

Bate provides advanced math courses for students who demonstrate readiness to learn at a level beyond their current grade. These courses allow students to progress more quickly in mathematics and build a strong foundation for high school and college-level coursework.

You can view Bate’s advanced coursework policy, approved by the SBDM, at bate.danvilleschools.net under About Our School>SBDM Council. Click “SBDM By-Laws and Policies” at the top of the page and use the document to find the advanced coursework policy.

Edna L. Toliver Intermediate School

Gifted and Talented programs, and more district initiatives

At all of the schools in the district, there are Gifted and Talented (GT) programs, including a primary talent pool before 4th grade at both Edna L. Toliver Intermediate School and Mary G. Hogsett Primary School.

Educators across the district differentiate in classrooms, which means that they meet individual students’ needs and meet them where they are in their learning.
