Dear Danville community,

There are several positive advancements taking place within the counseling and wellness department of the Danville Independent School District (DISD). Our counseling program consists of seven highly-qualified and experienced professionals who are committed to staying current with contemporary counseling techniques. We engage in ongoing training and hold monthly meetings to collaborate on strategies aimed at enhancing student and classroom wellness.

These meetings serve as valuable opportunities for both our professional growth and personal development. Additionally, we are fortunate to partner with the University of Kentucky Center on Trauma and Children (CTAC), which enables us to better understand the impacts of trauma on students' brain development and learning processes. Through this collaboration, we are able to incorporate trauma-focused, evidence-informed interventions into our multi-tiered systems of support.

I, Sammi Anders, have dedicated 21 years of service to the DISD and hold a position as a licensed mental health counselor. I work within all of the school buildings each week to deliver mental health counseling services and to support the counselors in their respective roles.

At Mary G. Hogsett Primary School, Ms. Brittany Broach (we call her BB) provides individual counseling and wellness services to students each morning and offers guidance and social-emotional learning in classrooms every afternoon. Additionally, classroom teachers are utilizing a program entitled Caring Schools to enhance classroom environments and introduce social and emotional topics and skills to our youngest students.

Edna L. Toliver Intermediate School is staffed with two counselors, Ms. Jennifer Goggin and Ms. Sequoya Brand, who actively engage in classrooms to deliver guidance lessons that support student wellness through the Caring Schools curriculum. Beyond classroom engagement, the counselors have initiated small group sessions to provide ongoing support in a more personalized setting. These groups focus on developing social skills, self-confidence, leadership qualities and effective communication strategies. We have also received a grant from the Danville Schools Education Foundation to help cover material costs, ensuring that students maximize their benefits from these groups. Furthermore, Toliver has invested in a program called Bloomsights, which significantly enhances our ability to assess how students feel about their safety, support and connection to the school community.

At John W. Bate Middle School, Ms. Sydney Reynolds delivers guidance lessons weekly using various social-emotional learning curricula. Students thoroughly enjoy monthly "Ms. Sydney Days," where we get to dive deeper into social-emotional standards. She also offers lunch groups that focus on social skills, coping skills, managing middle school expectations and friendship. Both Bate and Danville High School have implemented the 2x10 Connection strategy, which ensures that each student is connected to a trusted adult within the building.

Our DHS counselors, Ms. Shelly Ayers and Mr. Patrick Pemberton, prepare social-emotional learning activities every Monday during advisory sessions, utilizing the Sources of Strength program. Additionally, Ms. Ayers leads a student club focused on promoting the Sources of Strength initiative within the school community. Lunch groups are organized on Wednesdays and Fridays to assist students in developing social connections, managing their emotions, setting goals, fostering a positive school atmosphere and more. In conjunction with the previously mentioned 2x10 Connection strategy, the counselors, administrators and teachers at DHS enhance student wellness through regular check-ins and check-outs. This approach helps students set goals and receive positive reinforcement for achieving them in partnership with a trusted adult.

Our school district is fortunate to have dedicated leaders who offer support for our counseling programs. All of our administrators, counselors and teachers prioritize the needs of our students, reflecting a collective commitment to fostering collaboration as we work towards achieving student success both inside and outside the classroom.  All staff members involved with Danville Independent Schools recognize that the presence of healthy relationships in a child's life significantly enhances their ability to navigate challenges and achieve personal growth now and into the future.
