Fifteen outstanding students from John W. Bate Middle School are participating in the Talent Identification Program of Kentucky (TIP-KY) — a respected academic initiative offered through Western Kentucky University designed to challenge and support academically talented students across the state.

“TIP-KY students are champions in the making — and they’re already leveling up,” said Bate Principal Michelle Carver. “Congratulations to our TIP KY scholars! These students are daring to test their limits and rise above expectations.”

Through TIP-KY, these local middle schoolers will be part of a select group of students in grades 7 and 8 who will take the ACT, a college-bound assessment typically administered to high school juniors and seniors. This above-level testing experience gives younger students the chance to measure their academic skills on a broader scale, gain valuable insights into their strengths, and receive comprehensive guidance on enrichment and advanced learning opportunities.

The ACT opportunity is one of several enrichment avenues available through the TIP-KY program, which helps identify academic talent and supports students with resources to grow their potential. Students who participate receive a voucher code for the ACT, a detailed report to help families and educators plan for future success, and potential recognition at a statewide ceremony hosted by WKU.

“As a Gifted and Talented teacher, I am incredibly proud of these students for embracing a challenge beyond their grade level,” said Danville Schools Gifted and Talented Coordinator/Teacher Chelcy Sullivan. “Their selection for TIP-KY reflects not only high academic ability, but also curiosity, determination and a willingness to stretch their thinking. Opportunities like this help students recognize their potential early and inspire them to continue reaching higher. Congratulations to each of our TIP-KY scholars. Your hard work is shining bright.”

Participation in TIP-KY is based on academic performance — typically inviting students in the top 10% of their age group on standardized assessments — and also allows for teacher or parent nominations for high-potential learners who might not meet the standard criteria.

For the students at Bate, this selection reflects exceptional academic achievement and offers an early, meaningful experience with college-level evaluation. Taking the ACT now not only builds confidence but also provides insight that can guide future coursework and academic planning.

The Danville Independent School District is excited to support these students and their participation in this incredible opportunity.
