DHS takes on the world at KUNA

You would have been extremely proud of the way a small delegation of JSA students (Jono Beto, Joe Weston, Fariha Siddiqui, Calvin Steber, Emma Jackson,and Tyler Montgomery) represented DHS Sunday-Tuesday at the Kentucky United Nations Assembly in Louisville. At the closing awards ceremony, DHS won the Best New Delegation Award and a Certificate of Distinction. In addition, Jono Beto received a leadership award, and Joe Weston was named best speaker in his committee. Each member of our delegation, with help from other JSA members, contributed significantly to the group's success.

KUNA is a model UN that requires student delegations to create a flag, country sign, cultural display, and costumes appropriate to the country they represent. They must also complete a research document and write and debate a proprosal from the viewpoint of their country. Our students represented North Korea-- which didn't make our task easy. But our students finessed it! Our proposal was one of a handful that passed in a spirited debate.

Over 700 students from the eastern half of KY participated in KUNA, and it was obvious that many schools invested a lot of time and resources in preparation for their entries. We were very impressed by the over-all cross-cultural experience and the sophisticated level of debate. This is the first time DHS sent a delegation to KUNA, but we hope it won't be our last. -- Shari Stewart, sponsor
