Angel Alaves had several options to choose from when he signed up for the Service Learning Program at Bate Middle School, but he ended up working at a place he never thought he would.

Alaves has been working at A Lasting Impression during this school year working on flower arrangements, gift baskets, and sales. Alaves thought about working with kids or working in the restaurant business, but decided to try something completely new to him.

“I wanted to try something new. I wanted to see what it would be like to make things and design things,” Alaves said.

Owner Sandy Turner said Alaves has been a blessing and that she has been able to watch him grow throughout his time there.

“He’s probably grown most in dealing with the public, because retail is something where you experience a lot of different people,” Turner said.

“I think he’s also learned that it’s important to give back. He’s helped wrap big baskets for the chaplain’s auction, which allows the chaplains to help buy medicine for those who can’t afford it, and I think that’s sort of given him a new idea of what it means to work in a small community,” Turner said.

Alaves wants to be a chiropractor when he grows up, because he says he likes to work with his hands and help people.
