The DHS choirs, advanced poetry students, visual art students, and theater techies will present a Multi-Artistic Spring Performance on Thursday, May 23 at 7:00 p.m. in Gravely Hall. Teachers Shari Stewart, Shelly Lawrence, Mark Hayes and Collette Jones are putting together what promises to be a very appealing presentation of multiple art forms.

Alexis Finley was presented with a scholarship check for $1000 from Papa John’s today, May 6. Finley applied for the Papa John’s scholarship a few months ago to help with her tuition to Asbury in the fall. Today, she and her class celebrated with pizza, compliments of our local Papa John’s. English teacher Cassie Dickison said, “I can’t think of anyone more deserving of the celebration!”

The Log recently won third place in General Excellence and its staff won several individual awards in the 2013 Kentucky High School Journalism Association Contest (KHSJA). KHSJA recognized The Log and its staff in these categories: News Writing: first place, Josh Witt; News Writing: second place, Cayla Cress; Sports Writing: third place, Jody Raispis and Heather Grizzell; Column Writing: second place, Kayla Breitenbach; Column Writing: third place, Brianna Walls; Editorial Cartoon: first place, Mistaya Mingo; Page One Design: third place, Amanda Roberts; Two Page Layout: second place, John Thompson and Max Searcy; Two Page Layout: third place, Max Searcy; Overall Newspaper Design: second place; Illustrations/Graphics: second place, Mistaya Mingo. The Log competed in Class A; entries dated between March 2012 and March 2013 were entered in the contest.

Eight JSA members and sponsor Shari Stewart spent the weekend of April 26-28 in Columbus, OH, attending Ohio River Valley's Spring State. Among the highlights: Best speaker awards: Andrew McKinney, Calvin Steber, and Austin Barringer; Outgoing Director of Debate: Calvin Steber; Outgoing Mayor of the Southern Interior District: Andrew McKinney; Newly-elected Mayor of the Southern Interior Distrsct: Austin Barringer; Delegation leader: Fariha Siddiqui; and 2012-13 Ohio River Valley Chapter of the Year Award: Danville JSA. The award is based on several criteria including community involvement, chapter activities, political activism, participation in JSA conferences, a presentation, and an essay. DHS had stiff competition from schools much larger, but DHS’s JSA prevailed.
Nearly 90 students traveled to Frankfort on April 24 to watch DHS alumni Frank X. Walker’s induction as Kentucky’s newest poet laureate. Click on the photo to read more about the experience and Mr. Walker.
