Accountability / Data Trends

In Kentucky, all public schools are required to participate in the new accountability model: Unbridled Learning: College/Career Readiness for All which replaced the Commonwealth Accountability Testing System(CATS). In this model, students take the Kentucky Performance for Educational Rating Progress (K-PREP) assessments which measures student learning in grades 3-8 in reading, math, science, social studies and writing, and to grades 10-11 for on-demand writing. Older students also take end-of-course exams and other tests such as EXPLORE, PLAN, and the ACT (EPAS group).

In order to know that our students are learning, periodic assessments are taken. Assessments allows us to continuously analyze student progress toward mastery of content and skills. Assessment occurs in summative (i.e. chapter, unit, standardized, state, etc.) and formative (i.e. anecdotal records, checklists, exit slips, etc.) manners. Ongoing assessments is often called formative assessment. These are assessments conducted throughout instruction and learning to diagnose student needs, plan the next steps, and provide students with feedback they can use to improve the quality of work. A comprehensive assessment of learning is often called summative assessment. These are assessments that occur after learning has taken place. Examples would be K-PREP, End of Course (EOC) exams, final exams, and placement tests. In the classroom, different varieties of assessments are used to obtain the best information as to the student's performance level at a particular time.
