The John W. Bate Middle School Academic Team is heading to the regional Governor’s Cup.

The team qualified for the regional cup by finishing first in the District 61 Governor’s Cup on Saturday at Boyle County Middle School. The academic bulldogs also battled their way out of the loser’s bracket to win the double elimination quick recall tournament.

Tony Carney, head coach and science teacher said the team — which was a national runner up in quick recall last year — graduated many eighth grade members last year.

“This is the youngest team I’ve ever had in my coaching career,” Carney said.

The team only has three eighth grade and four seventh grade members. The majority of the team is sixth graders.

“Most of the content students are being scored on has yet to be covered in the sixth grade,” said Carney.

Carney also said the school was fortunate to have so many committed teachers tutoring, coaching, proctoring and scoring for the team.

photoTeam captain Ramona Pierce and her teammates are practicing hard several days a week after school.

“We’re practicing every Wednesday. On Thursdays, we focus on testing prep,” said Pierce. “We all confer with each other and help each other out by sharing resources.”

Pierce knows winning the regional cup will be more difficult than the district cup. Despite their young age, the team is determined to qualify for state. So determined that members choose to spend much of their free time preparing for competition.

“Regional Cup is a good bit harder than district because you’re competing against the champions, including the top 5 testers from all the regions,” said Pierce. “To prepare some of our members prepare google slides to help study, some use quizzlets and others work with flash cards.”

photoEighth grader Trinyte Welch is no stranger to hard work. She joined the team last year as a seventh grader and tests in mathematics and language arts. Last year, she never imagined she would be the math expert for the quick recall team.

“I struggled in practice — I was lucky if I scored 5 points,” said Welch. “I almost quit but decided I needed to persevere because I thought it would pay off.”

Trinyte was right. Not only has the academic team helped her grades, it has given her a confidence boost.

“After you study so hard and then get on the buzzer and you know an answer it really makes you feel proud,” said Welch.

The team will compete against fourteen other middle schools in the regional cup on Feb. 3 at John W. Bate Middle School. Testing begins at 8:30 a.m. with the quick recall tournament starting at 10:45 a.m.

Congratulations to these students and good luck at regional competition.
