Title of Course: A Week in Latin America (Intersession 2013)

Description:
Monday: A day in Mexico: We will start the morning by learning about Mexican cuisine. Students will cook their own Mexican lunch. We will learn some typical Mexican dialect that is different from Castilian Spanish. We will finish the day by watching a Spanish language film. We may possibly do something with the local Centro Latino on this day as well.
Tuesday: Latin-American music – explore the different types of Latin-American music and the dances that accompany them. Students will listen to different music samples, read song lyrics, watch music and dance performances on film.
Wednesday: Latin-American art. Students will choose different types of small Latin-American art projects to complete that day. Projects could include small tile mosaics, Guatemalan bracelets, etc.
Thursday: Students will possibly travel to UK or EKU to visit their Hispanic Studies departments. Another possibility is traveling to Lexington, KY and visiting “La Voz,” which is a Spanish language newspaper that is produced in Lexington. They will see their day to day operations and learn more about the Hispanic community living in Central Kentucky.
Friday: Students will travel to the Salsa Center in Lexington and receive Latin American dance instruction. Students will also enjoy an authentic Cuban meal or Nicaraguan meal at one of the local Hispanic restaurants.
