Description:

“You don’t write because you want to say something.  You write because you have something to say.” -F. Scott Fitzgerald

This is awriting course that will expose students to various styles of creative writing.  Students will read excerpts and selections of famous authors in order to understand the variety of techniques they may use in their own writing. Throughout the course students will be writing and sharing writing in order to fine tune their skills. Students will work through the writing process in order to generate a collection of creative writing to be published in a book displaying the entire class’ work.  Potential guest speakers (local, published authors) are expected.  Published book will be featured in this year’s “Celebration of Learning.”

Monday

View introductory film clip/essay on writing.  Identify strengths and weaknesses in writing.  Review basic literary terminology. Free write of choice.

Tuesday

Poetry sample/review of poetic devices.  Poetry/Prose free write and share out.

Wednesday

Lengthier writing: Short story, creative non-fiction, short essay.  Review of samples, free write, revision, and share out.

Thursday

Selecting works from this week and independent writing to be used in the class’ collection of creative writing.  Edit work.  Whole group share out.

Friday

Final touches on publishing/field trip to publisher to design and understand the process.
