Title of Course: Book Clubs and Best Sellers
Name of Supervising Teacher: Dickison / Shearer
Anticipated Cost: $0 - 10 Number of Students: 15 - 30
Description: Take a break from the typical canon of classic literature that you do in your English classes all the time, and get a chance to read something modern that real people are reading right now. Students who sign up for this course will choose one or two books (depending on length) that are on the current list of The New York Times Best Sellers. Recent best sellers include The Help, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Game of Thrones, Water for Elephants, and 11/22/63, among many others. Books will be selected and ordered before the intercession begins, in order for you to have maximum reading time during the week. Throughout the course of the week, you will have quite a bit of time to just read, with additional time built in to design your own discussion questions, respond to the books as we read, and have a large book club discussion on the final day –with snacks, of course! This course is designed for students who are able and willing to read independently for extended periods of time.
Educational Objectives (College / Career Readiness Focus):
1. Encourage literacy by allowing individual choice of reading material
2. Read critically and with maximum engagement with the text
3. Discuss the implications of the literature in regard to society and students’ individual lives
