Description:
The word philosophy comes from Greek and refers to the “love of wisdom” and can be connected to history, art, language, religion, and other disciplines. Logic and reasoning is the foundation of mathematics and science. Metacognition is a word often used to describe ‘thinking about thinking’ in disciplines such as education, psychology, and sociology. In short, humans have an instinctive urge to think about just about anything and everything.
This course will include an introduction to and overview of basic philosophy and logic/reasoning including connections to academic disciplines (humanities and sciences) and pop culture references, and further activities, discussion, and investigations based on student input.
Educational Objectives (College / Career Readiness Focus):
1. Students will improve their ability to understand, interpret, and analyze opposing viewpoints and human perspectives.
2. Students will improve critical reading, writing, and thinking skills.
3. Students will summarize their learning and present to classmates.
