Danville, KY- At a special called meeting, the Danville Board of Education announced the hiring of a new superintendent. Danville’s thirteenth superintendent is Carmen Coleman. Superintendent Coleman comes to Danville from the Fayette County Schools, where she has served as the Director of Elementary Schools for the past three years. During her tenure at Fayette County she has been responsible for supporting 11 elementary schools, consisting of nearly 6,000 students.
Over the last three years she has led the way in making major improvements in the Fayette County Schools and helped establish programs that have put schools on the cutting edge of teaching and learning. Having worked to spread Total Quality Management concepts, developing tools to measure and analyze student learning, and worked to improve teacher-leadership programs, she will be missed greatly by the Fayette County Schools. Fayette superintendent Stu Silberman said, “Carmen is one of the top leaders I have ever had the opportunity to work with. It won’t take very long for people to get to know her and totally respect her. She is not afraid to get right in there and roll up her sleeves to participate in the work, and she will never ask anyone to do anything she would not do herself. She is going to be an outstanding superintendent.” Coleman has also collaborated in identifying and supporting high school and middle school improvement strategies, as well as the establishment of a Spanish immersion program at two elementary schools.
With such credentials, Superintendent Coleman joins the Danville Schools as instructional leader. She is excited about getting her feet planted here and getting started as well. “I am very honored and humbled to have the opportunity to serve the children and community of Danville. I’m looking forward to becoming part of the community and working together to build upon the very strong foundation of excellence that’s already in place.”
Coleman is a native of Scott County and a graduate of Georgetown College. She earned an Ed.D, in educational leadership at the University of Kentucky in May. She was a teacher in Scott County and served as principal at Anne Mason Elementary School from 2002-06 before joining the leadership team in Fayette County. Coleman currently supervises and supports 11 schools in the Lexington district. The schools she oversees serve nearly 6,000 students.
Coleman enjoys gardening, reading, and owns a Morgan horse. Her husband, Scott, is a retired police officer who has supervised a middle school in-school suspension classroom in Scott County. He enjoys hunting and fishing. Their daughter, Megan, is 15.
